The FIFA Selection Committee decided the locations of the 2018 and 2022 FIFA World Cups which are Russia and Qatar respectively.
Bob Ley of ESPN when commenting on Qatar winning the bid stated:
“We have 12 years now to agree on the pronunciation.”
I haven’t heard too many who disagree with the decision of Russia hosting the 2018 FIFA World Cup, but Qatar is another story. It’s the smallest host nation in FIFA World Cup history — slightly smaller than Connecticut. The average temperature of Qatar in June is 130 °F. The Qatar Bid Committee has said they will make sure to air condition all stadiums. I’d hate to pay that power bill. It’s also the first host nation in the Middle East which I believe is the main reason Qatar was chosen not to mention all the money available to build state-of-the-art stadiums. You have to watch the video presenting the 5 stadiums they will build. FIFA is wanting to expand their reach and influence and where else is there besides the United Arab Emirates in the the Middle East. Hopefully, conflict in that part of the world won’t get any worse although I’m sure in 12 years the whole world will be a different place.
The U.S.A made a bid to be a host nation for one of the proposed years; however, failed to become the host country. You can read the bid and watch the presentation to the committee. The theme of the presentation was “The Game is in US.” The U.S.A bid committee focused on how much the popularity of football had increased over the last 25 years and how the U.S.A. is a melting pot of the nations of the world in an effort to convince the FIFA Selection Committee that the whole world is represented in America, so bring the FIFA World Cup to a country where people from every nation already lives.
